This trip marked my transition from the Hummer H2 to a Jeep. Three reasons: 1) the H2 was a maintenance nightmare, 2) The Jeep had more clearance, and 3) Jeep was narrower and much more suited to Colorado trails as a result.

OK, so I'm converted now.

Hell's Revenge

This trail is out in the Slickrock Bike Trail Area. I was battery-challenged this day.

Eb's rig set the standard early on

...any surprise that Brad followed suit?

Rusty Nail

Oh my. Pictures, web write-ups, videos had not done this trail justice. The obstacles at the beginning of Rusty Nail were, to say the least, extremely challenging. The rain the night before and that a.m. put some mud pits at the bottom of these obstacles

...you'll largely have to see them on my video (someday I'll get around to adding it here).

In the meantime, here's my rig going up the 2nd obstacle.

OK, so there is a cleverly disguised strap somewhere that helped me up this obstacle.

Then, we get dumped out on Gold Bar, near the Crack.

...straddling the crack seemed to be the calling that day:

...something tells me Paul & Brian's experience is not going to be as good, unless it involves a tip over and a beer

Upper Helldorado

The first 3/4 of a mile is through a dry streambed, and quite easy. Then, you reach an obstacle that marks the entrance to the gnarly stuff. Right off, it was apparent that I was not going to risk body damage to my newly-acquired Jeep. If there was any doubt, my 2 boys made up my mind for me.

The first and second obstacles were largely videoed. The first one required very careful spotting over massive boulders. Here, Brian demonstrates his skill at fixing a popped tire (3rd time is a charm):

The second one was as narrow as it gets, and was nearly impossible to avoid scraping the sides (as Brad found out):

The third, believe it or not, proved to be worse than the first two...especially to Joe's rig. He fancied a different line, which seemed to all of us after he tried it to be a route for ATVs, not Jeeps:

  This will work, won't it?

  Hmmm...maybe not

  No maybes about it

Extreme wheelin'? I think not. Extreme driving gets it done:

Brad's deft skill got him through the 3rd obstacle so fast that I barely had time for pictures (that'll get me $ 20)

At this point, it was time to take the boys back to swimming pool. The fun of watching the carnage was over, but the La Sals looked good on the way out.
