Sunset over the umbrella acacia tree in the Serengeti

Safari pictures are grouped according to the links on the left of this page in order to reduce load-time for dial-up users. On each page, you will find the name of the animal as we know it and the Swahili name, as well as some interesting facts about the animal.

All safari images on this site were taken with my 35 mm gear (with the exception of the above picture, which was digital), which consists of a Canon A2, a Canon EF 7-200 fixed f2.8 L lens with a 2x extender. This translates to an effective zoom lens with a focal length of 140-400/f5.6. While on safari, you do not have the opportunity to get out of the vehicle and set up a tripod, so I used Fuji Provia 400 (slides) to provide enough shutter speed and eliminate hand shake. I've scanned these in and reduced their size, then put them on this site.

Our safari schedule was as follows:

  1. Jan 7, 2003: Lake Manyara
  2. Jan 8: Serengeti (note: this was during the "wet season" in the Serengeti, and we were fortunate that it meant the migration was to the southern end ... where we went)
  3. Jan 9: Ngorongoro Crater
